The author sets a dark and depressing tone to the book by displaying the ways the characters adapt to their new lives in the "zombie apocalypse." The characters change who they are to survive in their new environments. This tone is displayed when Rick must put the zombies in Hershel's Barn out of their misery by killing them to protect the group of survivors.
